The Future of Disabilities
The "Finland Phenomenon"

It is with great hope that one day Canada can follow suit and adopt and implement the principles and philosophies of the supposed “best education system in the world”. The Finland education system has been recognized as such for several years as a result of its success of its both educators and learners alike. It makes paramount teacher education and training, and recognizes and values the diversity of its learners. It also views school as the most important aspect in a child’s life and honours teachers as one of the most prominent positions in the country. Ultimately, it greatly supports each individual within the schooling institutions within their country and seeks to share it with the world in hopes of ensuring success in education for all.

High education for teachers is critical, as they believe it will equip all teachers with the knowledge and skills necessary to face all that teaching brings forth. All teachers are not only required to possess a 4-year honours bachelors degree, as well as a teacher education license, but so too are they to possess a masters in education, as well as sometimes even a PhD in education if you an aspiring or working principal.

-
Teacher experience is incredibly important and is strongly considered when becoming a teacher and obtaining a position thereafter. Both work and voluntary experiences are considered, but teachers must have an extensive and diverse list to showcase.

-
Teacher training is provided often through the schooling institutions within which teachers work through the form of additional qualifications, workshops, and conferences. Several of these are provided every month and many are made mandatory.

-
Expansion of support is much greater than here in Canada. The Finnish education system not only provides guidance and support for their students and teachers, but they lessen the burden on teachers my employing other individuals to complete the various roles that would typically be imposed on teachers.

-
School days are significantly shortened (only 5 hour school days) so that teachers have enough time to prepare for the following day, work with students after school, attend meetings, conferences, and workshop, as well as relax, so that when they return, they feel ready and refreshed to begin a new day.
